Pear Crumble

I love fruit desserts, especially pies, crisps, and crumbles.  Here’s a yummy and healthy recipe that works this time of year when there really aren’t any fruits in season yet.

  • 5-6 pears, peeled and thinly sliced
  • 1/2 cup dark brown sugar
  • 2/3 cup rolled oats (I like Bob’s Red Mill)
  • 1/4 cup whole wheat flour
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp nutmeg
  • 3 Tbsp butter

Place pears in a glass baking dish (glass conducts heat better) and sprinkle with cinnamon and nutmeg if desired.  Mix all other ingredients in a bowl and smoosh together the butter with the dry ingredients to make the crumble topping.  Spread the topping evenly over the pears.  Bake at 350 F for 40-60 minutes, depending on how ripe the pears are.

Crunchy fruit in pies, crisps and crumbles is my pet peeve.  Make sure you cook it long enough or it won’t be nearly as yummy as when the fruit is fully cooked and soft.
