Brown Sugar Scrub

With cooler weather approaching, I decided it was time to make another batch of my brown sugar scrub.  I love this scrub because it’s easy to make, free of dyes and perfumes (and other harmful cosmetic chemicals), and both exfoliates and moisturizes.  It’s also a great way to eliminate the polluting plastic beads in most commercial scrubs.  Plus it smells great and leaves your skin very soft.

  • 1/3 cup packed dark brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup coconut oil
  • dash of vanilla extract

Mix all ingredients in a sealable container.  I use a small glass canning jar, but you could use a plastic container.  If the coconut oil is solidified, just soak the sealed jar in a bowl of hot water until it melts.  Don’t worry if it solidifies in the scrub, the warmth of your hands will melt it.

To use, rub a small amout of the scrub on your feet, body, hands or face.  Be careful to avoid your eyes.  Rinse with warm water.

I don’t have a picture because it’s kind of ugly… but it works great.

  1. Sweet! I need to make this… it’s been soooo cold the last few days!

Hey, since you have so much time, can you post a tutorial for the baby blanket? I am thinking that I could make Liam another one for Christmas in the two colors. The first one I made him is nice, but lopsided. 😀 I have so many craft ideas for Christmas in my head, but I need some concrete logic involved!

  2. I can’t wait to try this one. I love coconut oil, but never thought of using it in a face scrub.

Another good sugar scrub uses vegetable glycerin, regular sugar (organic is nice), and a wee bit of peppermint and tea tree essential oil. My teens LOVE this one. Bet they’ll love the brown sugar scrub as well. Thanks for sharing.

Good idea, never thought of it. May give it a try!

  4. I can’t wait to try this! And I just happen to have a bunch of coconut oil for my soap making! WooHoo! Thank you!

  5. Totally doing this! Also “I don’t have a picture because it’s kind of ugly” = HILARIOUS.

Where can I find coconut oil ?

  6. Love it! I usually take the leftover sugar mix from making cinnamon toast (which my kids love) and put some olive oil in it to use as a scrub. The coconut oil seems like it would last a bit longer.

I just made this and LOVE it! I tested it on half of my body (yeah, I’m a self-confessed dork) to see if I could tell a difference. HUGE difference! 🙂

I live in Wisconsin and it’s getting pretty blustery out there, and my skin is feeling the effects already. This brown sugar scrub exfoliates the rough skin off and leaves my skin silky-soft!

One question, though, any idea of it’s shelf life? I’m thinking of making some as Christmas presents for my friends and family, but I don’t want to make it too early and have them discover mold, or something, in it.
